An Abstract Illusion – Atonement Is Nigh

A Progressive/ Atmospheric Death Metal band from Sweden! Yeah, for something different, not another Atmospheric Black Metal review! Yeah, I know there are many of them, but I try to cover as many Metal genres as possible. Anyways, today I’ll be sharing my thoughts on An Abstract Illusion’s 2014 EP “Atonement Is Nigh”. Hailing from various places in northern Sweden, An Abstract Illusion was formed in late 2007 by 5 happy lads playing songs by Metallica, then Cannibal Corpse and Death, which ultimately lead to only playing own material.

First of all and stating this already, I love the EP, I freaking love it. It’s amazing… powerful, but elegant and exquisite at the same time, there’s almost a romantic feel over the music, but not something mellow. It’s not easy to try to “dissect” by my point of view all the emotions presented on an EP, there are so much going on here. It’s just beautiful, breathtaking, majestic and elevated. Truly one of this year’s finest releases.

The music is a mosaic of genres, metal or not. Citing as influences, for heaviness, Devin Townsend, Shining, Edge of Sanity, Emperor, for atmosphere, Sólstafir, Moonsorrow, Windir, Alcest and for softness, Brian Eno, Kleerup, Porcupine Tree, Hammock, Explosions in the Sky, Pink Floyd and God is an Astronaut, you can conclude that their music is a stew, a blend of many musical influences that these musicians were able to cook them with perfection, to transmute all of these diverse sounds into something of their own brand. It’s wonderful. A brief description of the music, there are simply killer riffs, jazzy parts, ambient, extreme metal vocals, clean vocals, lots of experimentation, ambient sounds, melodic death, acoustic guitars, piano, all in an epic and gratifying way. Simply fascinating.

About Atonement Is Nigh’s production, it’s clean and crisp, all audible and well-mixed, another outstanding aspect of this release. I ask you all to check this band and, if their music is what you enjoy, please, help them the way that is possible for you. Can’t purchase merchandise now? There are many other options to support a band, spread the word about them, my cherished readers.
