Dephosphorus – Ravenous Solemnity
Dephosphorus is a Greek band founded in the year 2008 in Athens. Having released one EP, two splits and the début full-length album “Night Sky Transform” in 2012, the band has established an important fan base as well as being regarded as one of the new forces from Greece. In 2014, after all highly regarded albums, the band is back with their “Astrogrind”, as the band dubs their style, that can be heard in the album “Ravenous Solemnity”.
I don’t think I could describe their music in one genre; it’s a “well cooked stew” of Grindcore, Punk, Black, Doom, Death, all very brutal, very fast, an aggressive attack from this Greeks. The music shifts very often, from one genre to another, difference paces, but never loosing its edge, intensity and violence. The styles are so well-blended that impressed me. This is a different band, we usually have blackened doom or blackened death, but these guys are different, they’ve managed to create a sound of their own.
The guitar work is outstanding; the high-pitched shrieks contribute to the insanity level of this release; the highly effective crushing drums are simply amazing as they fit the music so well. This is an interesting, different and original album that makes you feel like banging your head all the time. It seems that the band hasn’t played many live gigs, but I’d love to attend one of their future concerts, as I believe it must be a brutal assault. The lyrics are also very, very interesting, I’ve been reading them and searching for a deeper meaning, as I’m sure they have, trying to interpret them as well as co-relate to what’s going on in Greece. But this would take a huge article, and as the regular readers know, I don’t want to bore you with my words, but rather give a brief description of the album and how I feel about it. What I’m trying to say is that I want to tell you if the album is “awesome” or not. Always in my humble opinion, of course. And “Ravenous Solemnity” is, it’s an incredible album and a fresh air on the extreme metal scene, in my modest view.
The album’s production is meticulously clear; it will please the most extreme audiophiles. I finish my thoughts by asking you all to, please, support Dephosphorus the way that you are able to. This is such an engaging band that I truly expect them to be more and more praised.
Take care.
