Iceland is the home of some of the bands that I most admire. There’s something unique there, I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s interesting to see and very easy to notice how there are many particular sounds coming from that country, metal or not. Misþyrming was founded in Reykjavík two years ago and now we are able to enjoy their musical visions in “Söngvar elds og óreiðu”, released in February.
When I heard this album for the first time, I concluded that the Icelanders had released something fantastic, like many of the music created in their native land, very unique. After I heard it a few more times, I was able to hear more details and was even more impressed. This is the kind of release that you’ll find more and more “surprises” whenever listening to it. In my humble opinion, Söngvar elds og óreiðu, a début album, shows that Misþyrming is composed of skilled and highly creative minds that are searching for their own sound, their own brand. And I believe they have succeeded in it.
The music is very powerful and dark and yet atmospheric and subtle in many ways, even though the whole album has this imposing, massive feel. It’s also piercing and brutal, in many ways chaotic, but not in that “let’s mess everything up to sound weird”, an organized chaos that wrap up into an exquisite extreme work of art. I usually don’t mention the songs while sharing my thoughts, I prefer to give an overall feel about the release, but Söngur uppljómunar’s guitars are an example of refined beauty. What a remarkable and extraordinary creation.
When it comes to the production, the recording quality, well, in my modest view, we have a top-notch work, balancing between the clean recording and more of a raw sound, making this a very enjoyable album to listen also concerning the production, having in mind that we have here, one more time, a Black Metal release. And so, my friends, these are some words, some thoughts about Söngvar elds og óreiðu, how the album “feels”. I now ask you, if you’re interested and I surely hope so, to take some time to listen to their music and, if you like it, please, support the band.
Until next time.
