Mother – Original title: Madeo (2009)
Directed by: Joon-ho Bong
Tagline: She’ll stop at nothing.
If you do enjoy their modern and stylish cinema, I’m pretty sure you’ll be pleased. And, of course, in case that you are not familiar with this stunning cinema school, you’ll be surprised. Liking the movie or not.
Joon-ho Bong is a much respected film director and screenwriter. His work “The Host” is the highest grossing South Korean film of all time and sadly (in my humble opinion) it will be remade by the Universal Studios. Why do they have to remake all the great movies? I have never watched one single remake that was half as good as the original. Oh well, this is, again, a matter of personal opinion.
One more recommended film by Joon-ho Bong is the crime drama “Memories of Murder” which was based on a true story. This is his second release and was well received by the audience as well as the critics. I find an interesting aspect is that mostly of their movies do well on the box office and are also are respected by the critics.
Vlademir Lazo describes “Madeo” as an “electrifying thriller and a bizarre tragicomedy at the same time”. The plot can be summarized as the following: “A mother lives quietly with her twenty-eight-year-old son, Do-joon, providing herbs and acupuncture to neighbors. One day, a girl is brutally murdered, and Do-joon is charged with the killing. Now, it’s his mother’s call whether to prove him innocent or to leave him imprisoned” (Pusan International Film Festival).
“Madeo” deals with several controversial themes which I don’t think I should mention as it could be a spoiler for those that haven’t watched it yet. Most of them would give you an idea about the “questions” she’s trying to find an answer. Also, for the ones who enjoy Alfred Hitchcock’s movies, “Madeo” atmosphere is indeed Hitchcockian. You’ll easily find all the elements as watching it ;-).
The Mother (the character is unnamed) is completely engaged to seek justice. She undergoes and deals with dangerous places and people. In the real sense of the word, she is a MOTHER and they can truly understand what this woman goes through to save Yoon Do-joon, her son, from jail.
By the way, I like recommending these movies because they’re not so well known around the world and they deserve more recognition. I know that there are movies that are great, well done and even deep, but what would be new if I recommended to you guys a movie like Inception? Everybody knows about it :-). One more thing, I finished this suggestion after an almost twelve hours working day, so forgive the mistakes :-).
Watch it on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
