Tirin Kôr – Intimidation

Tirin Kôr is an Austrian band created in the year 2007 in the beautiful city of Vienna, Austria. After releasing an outstanding split with Dechristianisierung Europas in 2012, titled “Agitator”, the one-man Austrian band returns with now a full-length album named “Intimidation”. In A.v.G.’s words, the mastermind of Tirin Kôr, with “Intimidation”, I was trying to get a more powerful and straight sound, which also fits Tirin Kôr very well in my opinion. It is clearer and louder and you can hear every instrument better, while remaining at the same time very forward and driving. You can find an interview with him in this website.

Before I talk a bit about the album, I have to say that the Austrian Extreme Metal scene is indeed a very rich one, with many interesting bands from different styles. And I believe that we can clearly see a new wave of bands, coming from this nation, that are presenting us with unique approaches when it comes to Black Metal, approaches that are actually truly engaging and original. Also, when it comes to the founder of Tirin Kôr, he has been involved with many compelling bands, such as Greifenstein, which I highly advise you to get to know about it , if you happen to enjoy well-created Atmospheric Black Metal.

In “Intimidation” we find a very raw, extreme, but also, in some sort of way atmospheric, Black Metal that is truly passionate and aggressive. The vocals are indeed very emotional and high-pitched, bringing authentic ardour to the music. In my modest view, they are simply amazing, sounding like a tormented soul exuding its afflictions and desperation. The music also sounds very proud and refined in its bitterness. There is also another point that should be mentioned which is that the creations of Tirin Kôr are deeply connected to the nature.  I think you can sense that while listening to “Intimidation”, as the instrumental side has a heathen feel, but not that common one, actually sometimes overused in many bands, but rather a raw interpretation of the pagan chants.

There are many parts of “Intimidation” that the music reminds us of old school Black Metal, but it keeps its originality with an independent and personal approach. Being that said, this work reaches incredible levels of intense abrasiveness, a pure raw Armageddon. While still maintaining a certain beauty within the compositions, this crafted gem has different contrasts, being alluring, but also chaotic. Moreover, much like the title of this album, the music is indeed intimidating, furious and energetic, in a way, hypnotic as well.

Another aspect of this release that caught my attention were the guitars. They create an epic, iconoclastic mood that feels barbaric, of old days and distant lands. As I always like to mention, for me it is utterly important that the music is able to create imageries, landscapes in our minds, or better, to let ourselves be detached from the worldly common and boring days and I truly say that Tirin Kôr does that with magnificent. I am listening to “Intimidation” for the fifth time and I really feel isolated from my everyday worries and annoyances from our civilization. It is a form of escapism that we cannot really put a price in it.

I wholeheartedly believe that there is not sort of “get it” or “don’t get it” when it comes to music; it is either a matter of liking it or not. And I have loved this. Of course “Intimidation” is the type of album that is aimed for those that are interested in extreme metal art and if you do not like tortuous, tormenting music, if you will not enjoy it. If you happen to enjoy the darker manifestations of the human soul in art, then “intimidation” might suit your tastes. I can only state that it did enticed me with its malevolent aura. The production is perfect for this genre, not to clean, not to dirty. So, my cherished readers, I invite you all to check Tirin Kôr’s music and support/ promote this band, as this artist deserves it.

Take care.
