Crom Dubh – Heimweh

Here we have an UKBM act for you, the band “Crom Dubh”. Formed in the year 2003, has already released acclaimed music and returns with, in my humble opinion, a masterpiece named “Heimweh”, their début full-length. But, before I share my thoughts with you, allow me to quote some information about this album in order for you to get a better idea of what I’m talking about: CROM DUBH’s debut full-length, ‘Heimweh’ (‘Homesickness’), continues the narrative of the 2010 EP ‘Deifr’, in which the gathering and dissolution of a great river operated as a metaphor for the rise and fall of nations and civilizations. ‘Heimweh’ follows a similar narrative, albeit with a focus on the life of the lone individual within this tumult, following a traditional cradle-to-grave progression throughout the course of the album that runs parallel to Hesiod’s five ages of man. The album handles themes of loss, rootlessness, nostalgia, exile, and death, thinking on the journey ahead and the way home.

The musical genre of this work of art is Black Metal with Post-Rock influences. Don’t let this fool yourself, this band isn’t a clone of other already more known acts, they have their own identity and vision. Intense, powerful and exquisite, Heimweh has to be one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard. I can also add that it feels emotional, chilling and imposing, turning the experience of listening to Heimweh into something remarkable. I admit that I was very impressed with this release, cold, aggressive and yet alluring and enchanting.

About the production, it’s done as it should be, clear, but not too much, otherwise, in my modest view, it could sound sterile, mechanic. You’ll be able to listen to every single detail of the songs with no effort, so, another point for the mesmerizing work that is Heimweh. As I always point out, I listen to the release I’m sharing my thoughts while typing what I think about it and I should add, once again, that Heimweh gives me the chills, it’s such an outstanding piece.

I close my thoughts by inviting you to check Crom Dubh. Please, check their Bandcamp, Facebook, official home page, look for more information on them and, if you like their music, support this band the way you are able to. They truly deserve to be more praised and recognized.
