Evil – Ashes of Old
Founded over two decades ago, Evil has always been object of controversy and is considered one of the most infamous Brazilian Black Metal bands. I got to know their work through the compilation Pagan Fury, released in 2005, and, since then, I’ve been following the band’s releases. Ashes of Old, the new full length album of Brazilian most hated band of all times is now available and I shall share my thoughts about it. This is the 20th Years War Memorial album, featuring old and new songs composed during 1994 and 2013.
First of all, I have to say is that Evil has been evolving very intensely ever since its creation, musically, recording quality wise as well as the musicianship, now between two members, but it has always kept their true spirit alive, never compromising their sound. As the band states, Ashes of Old can be summarized as 50 minutes of nothing but Holocaust Black Metal, in its orthodox essence, as it must be!
The music “remains” with that raw, aggressive pagan feel, fast and wild, filled with tortured vocals, beautiful guitars riffs, bombastic drumming, all in a hateful, dark, vicious, enraged atmosphere. This is a very powerful and fierce release, cold as ice, reflecting all anger and indignation that possess this band. Evil is not the kind of band that creates childish spooky music, but real sorrowful and infuriated symphonies. Ashes of Old is, in my modest view, a great way to get to know the work of this serious and utterly interesting Black Metal band.
The production is clean enough for this musical genre. If you enjoy Black Metal, you’ll enjoy the production of Ashes of Old, since it fits the release. It’s not like their old demos, but neither very polished either, just perfect for the album, as I’ve already mentioned. I invite you all to check Ashes of Old, if you’re interested in orthodox Black Metal, you can easily find the album at their label’s official Bandcamp page. And if you enjoy what you hear, I ask you to, please, support the band, help keeping it alive.
Until next time.
