It’s a well-known fact that Norway is the home of many of the best Extreme Metal bands that exist as well as have existed. You always expect something else when you get to know that the band originally comes from the mentioned nation. I remember when I discovered Galar, it was the time when Myspace was still the most important social network. Heard some songs there and immediately fell in love with their music. And gladly, Galar is still active, for over a decade, and in 2015 releasing their third full-length album, which I’ll share my thoughts about it.
“De gjenlevende” is, one more time, a concept album. I believe it’s important to know what this is all about in order to be able to enjoy better the listening experience. Jorge Blutaar, the band’s lyricist explains that its five contemplative texts tell of the utter dreadfulness that haunts both the human mind and body when the season of winter holds every living thing in its grasp. Winter is the time of utter gloom, enfeeblement and inescapable death, which challenges mankind, beasts and plants equally. Yet, as long as there is life, there is hope, and eventually a new era of the Sun will bring to an end the seemingly eternal darkness of winter. With the arrival of spring hope and life will flourish once more. It is a portrayal of this cyclical process of transformation that is as old as the history of mankind itself.
I am searching for words to explain how this album has impressed me. It’s epic, beautiful, powerful, exquisite… the music features many symphonic elements as well as raw passages, with outstanding instrumentals, strong harsh vocals as well as gorgeous chanting, clean singing. There are parts that reminds of Borknagar, Ulver or Kampfar, but, by no means this is simply a “carbon copy”. Not at all. Galar is creative and innovative in their field, creating their own brand. Of course you can sense the influences here and there, but this is not a copycat. I can’t stress this out enough; the music here is simply sumptuous, glorious and superb, filled with riffs, insane drumming and a huge set of “unusual” instruments. I am in love with this fascinating masterpiece, in my modest view.
About the album’s production, well, it’s another more than positive aspect of this release. Every single detail can be heard with no effort, all very clean, but not to the point that the music becomes sterile. In my humble opinion, indeed it is one masterful work, not only when it comes to the production, but the whole package, including the music as well; a very strong candidate for the best 2015 releases.
To end this article, I ask you to give Galar a chance, if you still haven’t. As mentioned before, this is a talented and creative band that deserves even more recognition. If you enjoy what you hear, I beg of you to support them the way you are able to. Can’t purchase the album right now? There are many other ways that you can help promoting the band in the meantime.
Have a good day.
