Metal Maniac

Hornwood Fell – Hornwood Fell

Today an Italian band is being featured on Metal Maniac, Hornwood Fell. As described on Avantgarde Music Official Bandcamp, the project was born in May 2013 under the Nineties black metal influence. Among the group’s major influences the fierceness of Ulver’s Nattens Madrigal, the compulsiveness of Darkthrone, the first Borknagar album, Satyricon and Burzum. Rotten sounds. The past recurs and condensates in shadows and noises, dark and obscure woods, stones to stumble upon, dirt in the mouth. With such influences I was expecting an outstanding album and, fortunately, I wasn’t disappointed.

Hornwood Fell’s music is very aggressive, fierce, furious, fast, bombastic and violent, all that was expected from the best 90’s Black Metal bands, the main influence of this band. Yet being raw and there are many melodic and exquisite moments, especially when you can clearly sense the “Nattens Madrigal” influence, perhaps my all time favorite album. Yes, I’m not being impartial, but I can’t be with “Nattens Madrigal”, sorry. There are riffs after riffs after riffs, with incredible speed and insane drumming. The acoustic guitars add elegance to the album. The vocals are high pitched black metal shrieks that are very well fit into the music that Hornwood Fell created. The whole instrumental part is just stunning.

This is also a cold, icy release, a real tribute to the classic Black Metal sounds that most of the mentioned bands aren’t playing anymore, wandering in different paths. Not that this is something negative, but that 90’s sound created by the bands that Hornwood Fell cites as their primary influences was magical. But I shouldn’t complain, there’s so much great music out there done by many bands that it’s a waste of time to ask bands to “return to their roots”. And, to be frank, most of them are still playing amazing music anyways, different, but still great. But, back to Hornwood Fell, I really recommend this to anyone that is a fan of 90’s Black Metal. They’ve put together what is the best from that era.

Another positive point is that the production of Hornwood Fell is greatly satisfying. So, my dear readers, I ask you to, please, check this band and if you enjoy their music, and I know I did, support them. If you can’t purchase an album, let your metal listening friends know about this release, share the band’s page on Facebook, whatever you believe will help promote Hornwood Fell.

Take care.
