Moon – Earthbound
For me it is always an immense gratification to see younger generations of bands composing extreme music, be about starting a cover band or better, initiating with their own ideas. And this is what I’m always trying to discover and promote, people that are creating new art forms, instead of copying what’s is the latest trend. Drone Doom has obviously an audience, but we know that it’s something limited. It is one of those of those musical genres that you either love it or hate it. Whenever I talk to my friends about Sunn O))), for example, they do not understand my admiration for the band, mind you that I discuss these matters with those that enjoy extreme music, of course. Therefore, whenever I see a new band working on the cited style, the chances of them being sincere and honest with their music are very high.
I will quote the band’s own words for you to get to know a bit about them. Moon is a Drone Doom band from Massachusetts influenced by the great Sunn O))) and Earth. We love playing music and offer you our music for free! Feel free to donate and help further our band career. Well, I heard their EP “Earthbound” and was quite pleased with it. You can see that the right ideas are in there. Slowly bent, filled with tension, being dark and having a sense of complete emptiness, meant in a positive way. The background “noises” are always necessary, and they are presented here, resulting in a more trapped feel. All in all, I must say it again, I have appreciated their creation, although, this is only a personal taste, I guess it would work better without vocals. One more time, simply a personal view.
As I have stated before, this is surely the kind of work that will only please those that are interested in pure Drone, with no other sorts of experimentations. I admit that I really liked what I heard and must recognize the effort and ability of this young band. Achieving “success” and I quote it, as we all know this is indeed very limited when it comes to this genre, is very hard, but to know that you have achieved an audience, that people have enjoyed your music, must be already satisfying. I am sure that if they keep this way, Moon will only improve more and more.
The production, well, I always talk about the production quality, the work is not bad at all. It is obviously a bit lo-fi, but what is important is to be able to be driven away from the hypnotic sounds of Drone music. If you happen to dig this style, I invite you to check Moon’s “Earthbound” EP at their official Bandcamp page and, if you like what you hear, well, please, find a way to support and/ or promote them in any way that is possible for you.
Take care.
