Movie Suggestion VII: I Saw the Devil

Directed by: Jee-woon Kim (A Bittersweet Life, The Good, the Bad and the Weird)

Stars: Choi Min-sik (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, Shiri) and Lee Byung-hun (JSA, A Bittersweet Life)

Plot: “Kyung-chul (Choi Min-sik) is a dangerous psychopath who kills for pleasure. He has committed infernal serial murders in diabolic ways that one cannot even imagine and his victims range from young women to even children. The police have chased him for a long time, but were unable to catch him. One day, Joo-yeon, daughter of a retired police chief becomes his prey and is found dead in a horrific state. Her fiance Soo-hyun (Lee Byung-hun), a top secret agent, decides to track down the murderer himself. He promises himself that he will do everything in his power to take bloody vengeance against the killer, even if it means that he must become a monster himself to get this monstrous and inhumane killer.” (IMDB)

Another revenge movie from South Korea, and like almost all of them, I Saw the Devil is another brilliantly shot film. Even though it contains some beautiful scenes, it also features many, many brutal, unsettling ones and I must say that you won’t be able to forget them for a while. The plot is dense, intriguing, philosophical, amoral… Being a very tense movie, I Saw the Devil will pump up your adrenalin glands. The acting is simply outstanding, but hey, what else can you except from a movie that Choi Min-si stars? One more thing that catches the eyes of those interested in cinema is that there are some fascinating camera and direction works techniques.

In conclusion: this is a very interesting movie, but very violent, beautiful, dirty, ugly and even at times a bit funny. It’s certainly not the time of film that I’ll watch it again soon, but the whole experience of watching it is worth. Again: I Saw the Devil is not for the faint of heart.
