Founded in 2011/2012 in West London, United Kingdom, Nathicana’s latest release really interested me, that’s why I’m reviewing an EP from 2013. The band describes their genre with the following: “Swedish Buzzsaw / HM-2′ type Death Metal in the vein of Entombed, Hypocrisy. With elements of Black Metal and Doom.” In 2012 the self-titled demo was released and in 2013 we were able to listen to the magnificent EP that is “Dark Spirits & Violence”.
This is an EP that features a sinister, evil atmosphere, with a very intense and aggressive sound. The EP’s title, “Dark Spirits & Violence”, pretty much explains what the band’s music is about/ how it is, very dark and violent, but also atmospheric and, at many times, even catchy. The Brits really know how to build an interesting mood.
The guitar work feels epic; the vocals are harsh/ raspy and the drumming is crazy. Their effort is indeed commendable. As the music changes pace naturally, you don’t get bored or don’t feel its directions were forced. The work is all very organic. And I should add that their description is pretty much spot on, I just feel that the music is a bit more Black Metal than Death Metal, but who am I to disagree… The production is to be praised as well, all very balanced and distinguishable.
As I always ask, please, support the bands that you are an admirer. In this case, Nathicana, I ask you especially support for them because this is a creative band that is trying to “make it” in such a crowded and difficult world that is the world of metal music. Unfortunately, bands like Nathicana doesn’t really make it because of the sea of mediocrity that harms other bands.
